De Stijl

De Stijl (Dutch for "The Style") -an art movement based on a principle of merging art with our surrounding environment. That by the unification of architecture, sculpture and painting, a new plastic reality will be created. The prime example of this is the red/blue armchair by Gerrit Rietveld, created in 1918

a piece of art that also served a proper function (and as you can see was also pretty comfortable). This of course was a movement that had its peak in the 1920s, but because of its distinction has been replicated in our post (post) modern age.

Like this swimsuit collection by Sarah Schofield called “Mondrian Swim” inspired by Piet Mondrians painting composition with red, blue and yellow (1930)

Others have also showed their love for this movement. The White Stripes did an album called De Stijl, with their trademark red-white-black twist to it.

Around the internet you can find a bunch of creative tributes to De Stijl

ranging from nailpolish

to shoes

to dresses, and even cars (!)
