Last January Good magazine posted an article about how slowness can be as important to the future as speed, called Hurry Up and Wait. Here futurists explained different theories about the society we live in today. "

Slowing down affords a different kind of understanding and sense of yourself in the world. Im fascinated by some of the historical trends within russian (or soviet) fashion and design. The types often used on sovjet propaganda posters has this stakatto retro look that I quite like (below). In the image above you can see a scann from a -70s Soviet magazine called 'Fashion', well you could probably guess it was from the seventies.

Last year Saks Fift Avenue did the soviet-propaganda inspired ad campaign above with the slogans WANT IT! ARM YOURSELF!

Boardwalk Empire is rolling it's way across the TV screen these days and I cannot watch a single episode without being massively annoyed about the main character, Nucky Thompson's (played by Steve Buschemi) suits! They are just too perfect! And this creation of a man wears them in such elegance thats it's just a symphony for the eyes.

In every episode of Boardwalk Buschemi is draped in at least three magnificent tailored suits often sparkling with color, or made to convey a subtle elegance for the evening shows at the bar. Costume director John Dunn explains the hours upon hours of work he put into finding just the right look for this series:

"About four months before we started filming, I hit the research libraries at FIT, I went to the Brooklyn Museum, the Met. I would go to the rental houses, and I would meet with the vintage dealers. I pored over tailoring books from the period — just completely immersed myself in 1920. The entire first season all takes place that year, so I was very focused on making sure that the cut and the silhouette of the clothing was that: 1920." (Source: Esquire)

The Boardwalk Empire look is definitely a good card to play, that's what is so good about the 1920s mens fashion, it is just classic, epic and iconic.

For some reason my memory held on to this quote from Mad Men. It is taken from a conversation between Sally Draper and Glen Bishop where she tells her about a dream she had.

Glen: "You don't [believe in heaven]? Then what happens when you die? Nothing?"
Sally: "It doesn't really bother me except that it's forever. When I think about forever I get upset. Like the Landolakes butter has that indian girl sitting holding a box, and it has a picture of her on it holding a box with a picture of her on it holding a box. Have you ever noticed that?"
Glen: "I wish you wouldn't have said that."

I don't know why I remembered this, but it popped right up again this morning when I saw a documentary about the Dutch artist M. C. Escher. And his visual riddles. He is well known for creating surrealist works with impossible forms, knitted together in perfect symmetry. Like the hand drawing itself or the staircase to nowhere.

What the documentary focused on however was the missing piece of one of Escher's paintings "Print Gallery".

This artwork was created using a mathematical grid, created by Escher himself. And it was created in such a way that it produced a mathematical problem.

But by deconstructing and working on the mathematics behind this work for years Hendrik Willem Lenstra, Jr. managed to solve it and fill the blank spot. And what do you know? The answer to the riddle was to produce an image, within an image within an image...

This is not a man

From the dephts of Belgium came surrealist René Magritte and told us a thing or two about what we call reality. His main goal it seems is to pose a question of meaning and relationship between the painted (the image) and the real. He did so by creating new forms of identiy as part of his creative process.

The most famous of his painting is probably the one below, showing us not a pipe, but rather the image of a pipe, a painting resembeling our idea of what a pipe is. It is interesting to think this way every once in a while in a world overflowing with images.

Magritte is an interesting part of the surrealist movement, the themes in his work usually revolving around a duality of contrasting ideas. Day-night, passionate-grotesque, real-surreal and so on.

My favorite quote form the artist is this "An object is not so attached to its name that one cannot find another which might suit it better"

It gives one this very positive way of viewing ones surroundings. Nothing needs to be the way it is if it has a potential to be better.

American fashion photographer Greg Kadel did this series of Sasha Pivovarova for the September issue of Numéro. The raw attitude in these images is really captivating and the warpaint makes this first image really stand out.

In contrast to the series above I just had to show you this image of Pivovarova for Vogue Paris, shot by Mikael Jansson. This is one of those images you can really dwell on for a while, pondering on the connection between the child and the model portraying a mother or an older sister, the realization of fading youth or maybe more so, the feeling of finding common ground within themselves.

David Lynch up Close

Last weekend David Lynch visited Oslo and F&A sent out two able guys to check out the event. One (myself), a long time fan of Lynch's art and movies, the other (Kim) an expert and practitioner of Transcendental Meditation (TM), which is what Lynch came to Oslo to talk about.

First of all I must say it is truly inspirational to have met such a great filmmaker in person and to hear him talk about his work and his way of viewing the world around him. Lynch practices Transcendental Meditation two times a day, every day and he describes the feeling as 'diving within oneself, and experiencing a deep inner peace'. After learning more about TM it is easy to draw lines between the themes of TM and the themes of his films.

The main reason for Lynch's visit was to promote 'The David Lynch Foundation', and the practice of Transcendental Meditation. Through this foundation he wants to implement TM into the school system. There has been done dozens of tests on the effects of this meditation technique in youth and they all show results of higher test scores, a decrease in violence and heightened concentration. I must say it really sounds like a good contribution to the school system, and a way to remove some stress from a highly stressful environment.

Fashion Photography Exhibition in Stockholm

’Fashion’ is a representation of the evolution of fashion photography from the 1920s until today, based on Camera Works’ extensive fashion photography collection. 51 photographers and about 200 images are presented, most of them vintage prints. The old player Christopher Walken has appeared in a lot of movies, and a although many of those movies left the audience crying in despair from their lack of quality, Walken is one of those characters who always comes off well. Most people probably remember him from his part in 'The Deer Hunter' or as the Hessian Horseman in 'Sleepy Hollow'. He also did great work in 'The Dead Zone', 'Pulp Fiction' and many other features. Walken not only has a characteristic look, but a way of talking and moving that is easily recognized, that’s probably why he was cast as a dancer in the music video for Fat Boy Slim-Weapon of Choice.

Steve Bushcemi is one of my favorite actors, now featuring in the new series 'Boardwalk Empire' as Nucky Thompson, the boss of the Atlantic City gang. In every movie I have seen him he has been a highly memorable character, even in the small part as a waitor in Pulp Fiction, and when he makes a guest appearance in a TV show or shows up by surprise in a movie you just know it's going to be good.

Willem Dafoe is also easily a part of this gang. He has one of those faces that can turn psycho on you any second. He could recently be seen in Lars von Triers controversial 'Antichrist', but one of his most memorable appearances is in my opinion 'Boondock Saints'. With his extravagant character he really makes that movie worthy of praise.

I think these three represent the top shelf of characteristic actors, if you think there are others that fit among them do tell!

Selected Brands - Spring 2011 Video

These are the Selected Brands spring trends starting with maritime greys and reds and taking us through themes of bedroom romance, the Moroccan landscape and the colourful Caribbean. Director Jan Gunnar Svenson did a great job with this show, with smooth transitions between themes split up by stylish bellboys and sailors striding across the runway, complimenting the models and carefully selected outfits. Singer Nora Noor and violinist Marthe Krogh also did an impressive performance and made this a memorable evening.

I came across this astonishing image the other day of Model Anouck Lepere shot by Jean-François Campos in Sicily, for the October issue of Flair. This image really brings back the feel of some of the films from Italian Neorealism mixed with the daring look of a femme fatale from a 1940s film noir.

Screaming; painting a sound

One of the greatest painters of our time Francis Bacon (1909-92) often visited the theme of the shrieking, wide open mouth in his work. Drawing inspiration from medical textbooks and photographic stills of the battered nurse in the Odessa Steps scene of Battleship Potemkin he communicated a strong feeling of distress as we can clearly see in his Pope series, Based on Portrait of Pope Innocent X by Velazquez.

Of course the most well known depiction of a scream does not come from Bacon, but Norwegian artist Edvard Munch. Painted in 1893, The Scream is Munch's most famous work and one of the most recognizable paintings in all art. It has been widely interpreted as representing the universal anxiety of modern man. We can feel by the way it is painted, a sense of loosing oneself to a greater feeling or perhaps more accurately to madness.

Another take on the screaming face is one of Liz Markus’ portraits of Nancy Reagan. Although Markus has an obvious attraction to this image, and has painted it several times, we found the example below to be one of her best depictions. It resembles the overcooked emotional interior of a 60s housewife, who has gone through life suppressing her feelings to keep up a flawless façade.

Dutch born Lara Catherina Stone is one of the hottest faces in the fashion industry today, and we can se her signature gap tooth pride campaigns for Prada, Givenchy, Louis Vitton, Giorgio Armani just to mention a few. So what happens when she is paired up with visionary photographers Mert & Marcus? Well the result is quite impressive. The images display a duality between the hardness of the look and the softness of the skin / fabric. We get the impression of a statue, a Venus de Milo or Lady Justice come to life as a chiseled seductress, ready to wreak havoc and dominate the world of men, and featuring some beautiful pieces from Christian Dior, Yves Saint Laurent, Givency, Dolce & Gabbana, Marc Jacobs and Gianfranco Ferre among others, along the way.

-When cartoons and art transfuse to create something deeper and massively more compelling than either would have managed on their own.

Charles Burns used almost ten years of his life to create the complete work ‘Black Hole’ (2005) which is a story about a sexually transmitted disease among American teenagers in suburban Seattle in the mid 1970s. The interesting thing about the story is not the disease though, but the mindset of the teenagers caught in this scenario. We feel the cruelty, the relentless anxiety and the longing to escape and it is all encapsulated within the recognizable style of Burns’ drawings. The intense use of shadow with not even a hint of grey, and the surreal places he takes us to makes this book a one-of-a-kind. The feel of the book communicates in a way that few other stories could, especially the subdued feelings of the characters within it. Some of his latest work can be seen on the cover of the latest album by Fever Ray.

A more common merge of art and comics are collaborative works, like Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ ‘Watchmen’ or Grant Morrison and Dave McKean with ‘Arkham Asylum’. The latter a story worth reading for its imagery alone. McKean has an incredible ability to make something look grotesque and beautiful at the same time, and it is a pleasure to see something as familiar as a story about the batman be turned into a work of art.

These are just some examples of great work that it is worth looking into, and we would love to see more artoons spread out across the world.

Breathless

"You Americans are dumb. You admire Lafayette and Maurice Chevalier. They're the dumbest of all Frenchmen."

The quote is from Jean Luc Godard's film À bout de souffle (1960) a story about two young lovers in, whereof one of them happens to be a criminal. The film distinctly expresses the French New Wave's style, and incorporates quotations from several elements of popular culture at the time, specifically American cinema.

Breathless is really, in our opinion, a must see for all photographers, fashion designers and film-makers out there. The dialog, the style and the backdrop of sixties France is enough to justify the title.

An interesting aspect of Godard's philosophy on filmmaking was his inherent and deliberate embrace of contradiction. In short, Godard used "mass-market" aesthetics in his film to make a statement about capitalism and consequent societal decline. All of his films are really worthwhile watching, but this one will always stand out at the masterpiece in our books.
